Pandy Lane :: Use of winch

The current wisdom states, for very good and fairly obvious reasons, that you should never drive green lanes, or drive off-road alone. Indeed, in the military, at least when I served, you would take at least one vehicle of the same type of yours, if you were to venture into hostile territory. I feel a hypocrite having said that, because I drive about 99% of the time alone, and as you can see from my videos, I tend not to choose the easier options. I do however reconcile myself with the fact that my videos make it look easy. The videos do somewhat flatten the steep rocky steps, and straighten the steep tilt angles. In addition, I never cut out my failures and flops - I do not consider myself to be a great driver, but I am an experienced driver. I can only ask of you that any inexperienced driver, please, please go out with someone at least until you feel confident enough to know your vehicle, and your own limits.

What you are about to see is not really extreme. In fact, it's a fairly easy drive, but it is an interesting one. However, I found myself quite far from home, late on in the day, being unable to ascend a muddy section of an unclassified road. Furthermore, I'm in a part of the world where the locals don't care much for green laners. They have had their fair share of large groups of bikes and 4x4s, making a noise and a mess. The locals in this area are oftentimes unwilling to assist.

To cut to the chase, I'm far from home, it's getting dark (I have lightened the whole video so you can see what I'm doing), and I can't move ahead without a winch. There are no short cuts. In this instance, I could have turned around. There are however lanes out there that you must commit to (there is no reversing out of some - see my video on Green Laning in Conwy County for example).

For those of you who are experienced, you can skip the winching by going to 11:35 as soon as you see me stop at the crux.
