In 1993, Prince was at the most unique crossroads of his prolific career. The Minneapolis-born icon had signed to a major label at the age of 19 and quickly established himself as an innovative performer like no other, a true original: prolific in his musical output; boundless in his talent for producing, writing, performing and arranging, not only for himself but other artists; and possessed of a unique, unconfined personal and artistic vision infused with love, sex, religious faith and equality. But 15 years into his career — after helping build the sound of pop, rock and soul in the 1980s and branching out into increasingly diverse projects in the 1990s — Prince’s faith in the music industry was tested. Frustrated with its conservative approach toward releasing his music, he announced in 1993, on his 35th birthday, his intention to be reborn anew. Prince embarked on a public battle for freedom and independence that took him through many genres and styles, pushing himself to the most cutting edge of musical distribution, and searching for the truest essence of himself as a human being. For even for the truest of funk soldiers, there is much to discover. This is Prince at his most honest, challenging and enigmatic, and as a result, perhaps the most rewarding, too.
