The landscapes portrayed in these "pillow shots" include Yokohama, Koyasan, Boston, New York City.
Osamu Dezaki was an animation auteur. One of his unique contributions - besides watercolor stills (postcard memories) and use of the split screen - was mastering the "pillow shot" in animation. Pillow shots, introduced by Yasujiro Ozu and used by filmmakers such as Hirokazu Koreeda, are brief cutaways from the action of the characters onscreen to a visual element for no obvious narrative reason. The phrase "pillow shot" references the "pillow-word" in poetry - a nonsense syllable to provide a non sequitur, almost like a visual palate cleanser to prepare one for what comes next.
