The San Antonio class is a versatile class of amphibious transport docks operated by the U.S. Navy. These warships are designed to transport and deploy Marines, their equipment, and supplies ashore via air cushion or conventional landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles, augmented by helicopters or vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
Each San Antonio-class ship displaces over 25,000 tons and can carry up to 700 Marines, along with their vehicles and equipment. The ship's large flight deck is capable of handling multiple helicopters and tilt-rotor aircraft like the MV-22 Osprey. Additionally, the well deck can accommodate landing craft, air cushion vehicles, and other equipment.
Equipped with advanced command and control systems, these ships provide the capability for mission planning, coordination, and execution. To enhance survivability, the San Antonio class incorporates features like improved armor protection and damage control systems.
The San Antonio class plays a crucial role in the U.S. Navy's amphibious assault capabilities, providing a versatile platform for projecting power and conducting humanitarian missions around the globe. Their ability to transport and deploy forces rapidly and effectively makes them indispensable assets in modern naval operations.
