January finally brings the cold temperatures we’ve been waiting for, locking up the shallow ponds and pushing mallards down onto the flowing waters.

The rivers are quiet this time of year, their banks dusted with snow and their currents winding through breathtaking mountain valleys. The hunt’s pace is deliberate—less volume, more elegance. The birds are full-bodied and photogenic, dropping in gracefully, flashing their emerald heads and full winter plumage against a golden backdrop of rugged peaks.

We finish the episode in true Mountain View Mallards style—setting up on a snowy field framed by towering mountains. As the sun dips low, painting the sky in deep golds and fiery reds, the mallards come steady, flock after flock. Limits are met, laughs are shared, and the final view is exactly what the name promises.
