The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa’s largest hydroelectric power project — and one of the most controversial. Built on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, this $5 billion mega-dam is designed to generate 6,450 MW of electricity, enough to double Ethiopia’s power supply and bring light to millions.
But downstream countries, especially Egypt and Sudan, fear the dam could threaten their water security. Egypt relies on the Nile for over 90% of its water, and Sudan worries about safety and reduced flows. For more than a decade, negotiations have stalled, raising tensions in one of the world’s most fragile regions.
In this video, we explore:
✅ The story of Ethiopia’s ambitious dream to power its future
✅ How the GERD works — scale, capacity, and construction facts
The GERD is more than a dam — it is a test of diplomacy, development, and destiny for three nations bound by the Nile.
