Fanny Mendelssohn is the older sister of the celebrated German composer, Felix Mendelssohn. They grew up studying piano and composition together and were both extremely talented. These siblings developed a very close bond; in fact, when Fanny passed away, Felix was devastated and died less than six months later.
In their time, it was considered a disgrace for women to compose and especially to publish music to earn money. Therefore, Fanny often had to publish music under the name of her brother. Fortunately, after she got married, Fanny's husband fully supported her musical pursuits and she continued to compose. This trio is one of her many beautiful works. As an all-female ensemble, we love exploring under-represented and excellent works by female composers. I hope you will enjoy this lesser-discovered musical gem, Fanny Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in D minor, op. 11, presented to you by the Aletheia Piano Trio.
