Hey friends! Guess who's back—this time not with covers, but with something of my own! Some of you probably know by now that I've been focusing more on composing rather than performing lately. Yeah, I know... a tough sacrifice, but I still try to cook up something for you when I can.
Last year, I wrote a piano concerto, and my professor suggested I submit it to a competition called Partitura. So, off it went during winter, and by autumn, some interesting news came knocking at my door.
Hehe, let’s just say the past three weeks have been... well, exciting and a bit nerve-wracking, to put it lightly! But the most important thing is: my friend Shaura and I survived! 😄 She’s an incredible pianist, and just so happens to be head of the piano department at the institute I used to attend.
So, the competition organizers called to let me know that one part of my piano concerto would be performed live at the Great Hall of The Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservaroty! Sounds amazing, right? Well, I was terrified. But little by little, we got into the flow, and work began.
Of course, we had to trim the score down a bit for time limits and the live broadcast. A little "surgical adjustment," but hey, the piece still has its guts intact! 😅 Then I roped in Shaura Sagitova to join me on this wild ride, filled with deadlines and anxiety. Huge thanks to her for agreeing to jump on board! 😅 Now that there were two of us, the fear got a bit easier to handle.
Later, conductor Sergey Kondrashev gave me a call and said the orchestra had started working on the piece. The next day, I flew to Moscow, and rehearsals kicked off with the Moscow State Academic Symphony Orchestra. At some point, that old familiar fear crept back in, but everything went as smoothly as butter. On Monday, Shaura arrived—poor thing, exhausted from the flight, and yet, straight into rehearsals with the orchestra. And off we went again! 🙃 We played, took notes, and made corrections. And today, we had the final rehearsal at the Great Hall—everything in place, and full preparation mode.
This has been an unforgettable experience! And Shaura, like Cinderella after the ball, has already dashed off to the airport. May she be blessed with strength and energy! Tomorrow, I'll be heading back too, full of memories... and a couple more gray hairs! 😆
