Russia has connected the first power unit of the Kursk NPP-2 nuclear plant to its unified energy system, commissioning a 1,250 megawatt reactor that has become the most powerful in Rosatom’s portfolio. The VVER-TOI unit, synchronized with the grid at an initial capacity of 240 megawatts, is expected to significantly boost electricity generation in the Kursk region and marks the first step in Moscow’s plan to expand nuclear power’s share of the national energy mix to 25 percent by 2042, despite ongoing conflict near the site and continued Western sanctions.
