How to get use to a smaller river surfboard
I just got the new BadFish 6’11” river surfer. It is pretty low volume at 104 liters. I have surfed it a few times. It surfs amazing! I was a little unstable paddling across the current and in the eddy. Paddling a low volume board in the river takes a lot of skill. The river has so many currents pulling in so many different directions. All that going on can make it really hard to balance on any board, let alone a low volume board.
I decided it would be a good idea to take my board out to the lake to get comfortable on it in the flat water. When getting use to a low volume board. It is a good idea to take it to some flat water to get comfortable before you add the extra challenge of all the river current. Plus heading out to the lake was an opportunity to grill up some dinner with my brother and enjoy the sunset.
Tips for stability
Stagger your feet
If you stand in a slightly staggered stance it will help with stability. Standing with one foot back slightly is called a staggered stance. It with give you side to side stability and front to back stability.
Keep your paddle in the water
Anytime you are just standing around on your board. Keep your paddle in the water or breaking the surface of the water. Having a 3rd point of contact with the water is going to help make you more stable.
Speed
When you are paddling around you are going to be more stable. The faster you are going the more stable you will feel. Move around in the water. It will make you feel more stable because the speed will keep the board from sinking in the water.
Remember to keep having fun. You can always sit on the board while you are waiting for your turn to surf. That way you conserve energy and don’t waste it trying not to fall off your board. The more time you spend paddling your low volume board the more comfortable you will be on it! See you on the water!
