The chi-squared test (χ2) is a statistical test to identify if there is or isn't a connection between two categorical variables. In Ecology we lay this out using two hypotheses:
Null hypothesis (H0): Species X and Y distribution is unrelated.
Alternative hypothesis (HA): Species X and Y distribution is linked (either positively or negatively).
Quadrat sampling provides data for this test. NOTE, if this were to be done as an actual study, I would want a larger sample size.
