Flat track racing might look like fun and games — but the truth is, the skills you learn on the dirt could save your life on the street.
In this video, I head to Royal Enfield’s Slide School, a flat track training program taught by pro racer Johnny Lewis of Moto Anatomy and hosted by Baxter Cycle in Iowa. With almost no dirt experience, I wanted to expand my skill set as a rider — and what I found was the #1 survival skill every motorcyclist should know: how to stay in control when traction disappears.
Whether it’s gravel, rain, painted lines, or a surprise slick corner, what I learned here applies to every rider on every road. These are skills you should add to your toolbox.
The bonus is that if you love it there are a number of flat track races you can take part in around the country. I'm still considering it.
We trained on Royal Enfield FT450s — modified Guerrilla 450s built for the oval — and by the end, I was hooked. Flat track isn’t something you master in a day, but every lap brings you closer to flow… what the samurai once called Mushin.
Join me for a first-hand look at Slide School, a one-on-one with Johnny Lewis, and the thrill of learning to go sideways on purpose.
