The UP Big Boy No. 4014 had just been restored by the Union Pacific Steam Operations Program in time for celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's drive of the Golden Spike. Both the Big Boy and the Living Legend No. 844 doubleheaded together in what was called "The Great Race to Ogden," where ceremonies would be held to commemorate this special event. Thousands of people from all across the country, even some from around the world, came to witness Big Boy on the move. Luckily for me, I was conveniently located in Nebraska for work with about a 6 hour drive to Cheyenne, and I was able to get the day off to witness this event for myself! The journey for the train took 4 days traveling across the rails in Wyoming and Utah. I only came out for the first leg of the trip going from Cheyenne to Rawlins. I was in for a loooooooooooong day with hours on road, being I had to be back in Lincoln for work the next day. But this was definitely something I wanted to see for myself. So come along and journey with me as this historic chase is one to remember!
