Renowned Queensland historian Gregory Cope discusses the unique story of how railways in Queensland were proposed and developed, beginning as single rail lines and were eventually were joined up in the 1920s, playing a major role in the development of the State. A unique aspect of the railway system was the first time use of narrow gauge rails for the main trunkline. Cope explains the significance of research materials at John Oxley Library and how to use Notes on Queensland Railways by John D. Kerr, a rich compilation of rail history from the 1860s through the 1970s. Other significant resources at the John Oxley Library include photographs, reports, newsletters and ephemera.
