The name Dorothy Dandridge is barely recognized in the world today, but in the 1950’s and early 1960’s the name conjured up visions of one of the world’s most supremely talented and beautiful women. In 1954 Dandridge earned the lead role in Otto Preminger’s film, Carmen Jones. Her work won instant acclaim and made her the first woman to be given an Academy Award Best Actress nomination. Although her beauty and talent were legendary, roles for black women were hard to come by in Hollywood in the 1950’s. In 1957 she starred in Island in the Sun with Harry Belafonte, with whom she had a long and passionate love affair. Her best-known role was again given to her by Otto Preminger when she starred in his 1959 film of Porgy and Bess. In this clip from the Ford Star Jubilee on October 6, 1956, Dandridge recreates a song that was originally staged by Bob Alton for Mary Martin from the Cole Porter Hit, “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.”
