The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ is here as the coupé that replaces both the C-Class Coupé and E-Class Coupé, and the one AMG hopes will lure buyers who once craved the C63. But without the mighty V8, does it still feel like a true AMG?

Under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six, paired with mild-hybrid tech, delivering 449bhp, 560Nm, and a 0–100km/h time of 4.2 seconds. On paper, it’s quick. On the road, it’s handsome, composed, and corners flat. It even comes with rear-wheel steering and Drift Mode.

But here’s the question: is competence enough when you wear an AMG badge? The CLE 53 is stylish, modern, and technically impressive, but it doesn’t quite deliver the raw, raucous character AMG built its reputation on.
