Using the old and familiar vessel of the suite, two twentieth-century composers provide us with new and decidedly witty contents, composed nearly contemporaneously. British composer Gordon Jacob’s Old Wine in New Bottles utilizes traditional folk songs in fresh instrumental and harmonic settings, while The Good Soldier Schweik Suite by American composer Robert Kurka is based on the eponymous, satirical anti-war novel. Darius Milhaud’s innovative ballet music, La Création du monde makes use of jazz idioms in the most classical of forms, adding another inventive ingredient. Newest of all, our most recent Concerto Competition winner will also be joining us for this concert.
