SR Merchant Navy No. 35028 'Clan Line' would travel to Portsea Island on Saturday 15th November, at the head of the 'Portsmouth Pullman'. Promoted by UK Railtours, the train would run from London Victoria to Portsmouth Harbour and return. The Pacific would head the outward leg via Woking, Eastleigh and Fareham to Havant, where the train would reverse, and Class 67 No. 67024 would lead for the final leg into Pompey. The return journey would be steam hauled throughout, running via Chichester and Hove, before returning to the Capital via the Brighton Main Line.
We begin in rather atmospheric conditions at Hook Heath, on the outskirts of Woking. 'Clan Line' emerges from the morning fog and passes underneath the bridge at St John's Hill Road, running nearly 15 minutes early! The weather had changed considerably by the time we reached our next location, Wallington Viaduct. Here, the loco sparkles in the winter sunshine, as it powers away from Fareham. With the outward leg complete, the train is next seen arriving at Fratton for servicing. We capture the return journey at two locations. Starting at Warblington, the crowds are out in force to witness the Pacific accelerate away from a booked stop at Havant. We conclude with a night scene from Balcombe, as 35028 hurries through the station, en route for London.
