Kuso Daydreams is a Puzzle / Kaizo hack of Super Mario Bros 2 that I made over the last month or so. I wanted to make a hack that abused and celebrated all of the strange oddities and mechanics within SMB2, a game that I feel has extremely rich potential for how simple it is (relative to later games like SMB3 and SMW, of course).

Throughout our journey, Mario, Peach, Toad, and Luigi, four good friends through many a journey, find themselves bouncing objects on their heads, glitching through walls, and causing other things to glitch through walls, all in a concise "one screen nightmare cafe" format, a sacred tradition etched in stone by the Kuso and Kaizo greats of time past.

Solutions / level explanations can be found below (SPOILER ALERT):










1-1: Standing on a sprite while a POW quake is active will cause the sprite to suddenly gain a large amount of height. If this happens while you approach a solid object, you can be pushed through the ceiling.

1-2: When you grab five BIG veggies in a row (this doesn't work with small veggies), you'll pull out a stopwatch.

1-3: Boss doors appear whenever you have defeated the enemy that is flagged as the "boss" in the stage (this can actually be multiple enemies technically, or any enemy at all! It doesn't need to be Birdo). Mushroom blocks can't be thrown while you're standing in scenery, as the block detects an object.

2-1: POW block earthquakes make certain sprites (that don't die from a POW) hop a little (and go through objects).

2-2: The way that vines / ladders work in SMB2 is that, if you're still climbing while going offscreen, it counts as a screen transition, but you'll end up in a new Y position dependent on where you warped. By allowing the key to land on top of Toad WHILE climbing upward at the same time, the key will push you through the floor.

2-3: There's a glitch in SMB2 where certain sprites (such as keys) can actually bounce on the player's head, slowly gaining height with each bounce.

3-1: Taking damage while you have an extra heart gives a slight upward boost. This boost is a lot more significant while playing as Luigi.

3-2: Mushroom blocks can hover in midair pretty easily - the problem is that normally, when thrown, it obeys gravity until it has a chance to "latch" onto the ground. One way around this, however, is to throw a mushroom block on top of another mushroom block such that it latches onto the mushroom while you stand inside of it. From there, you can pick up the bottom mushroom, and the top mushroom is now floating in midair.

3-3: You're temporarily invincible while pulling a plant from out of the ground.

4-1: Not really a glitch, but you need to grab the orb in midair. Rocket explosions can apparently affect breakable rocks.

4-2: The POW earthquake causes the whale spout to boost upward, since it's also a sprite.

4-3: The first step here is to throw the POW and remove a mushroom block immediately so that the POW can fall through and into the pit, rather than activating. You need to then somehow get the mushroom block onto the orange tree (it'll stay on top of it, since it counts as an object, and scenery acts like a solid object to mushroom blocks). The trick here is using the properties of mushroom blocks, which act like sprites until they "latch onto" another object.

5-1: When the hawk mouth expands and you're standing on top of it, you gain a bit of height. Since this is a sprite pushing you upwards, it follows regular SMB2 rules, and you can actually slightly clip through blocks.

5-2: After going through a subspace door, all sprites within a 3 tile radius won't spawn from where the door was placed. That means all sprites on the exact X position of the door, as well as all sprites 1 tile left and 1 tile right.

5-3: During the boss door is spawning fanfare, you are completely frozen; however, other sprites can still move around during the spawn fanfare.

6-1: Thrown veggies can gain a huge boost in height during a POW earthquake.

6-2: For the first trick, drop the potion right on the edge of the block and fall immediately. Since Toad falls pretty quickly, you can stand on the potion as it falls and jump off it if you've timed it well.

6-3: Birdo needs to be frozen while in midair so that the POW quake doesn't have any effect. From there, you can set up the mushroom block in the spot needed underneath where the boss door will spawn.

7-1: You need the two shy guys to bounce into each other while upside down at the same time, which causes them both to start hovering indefinitely. You can then use them as an elevator to push you through the ceiling.

7-2: There's a lot of steps here, but the main thing to remember is the trick used in 5-2: after going through a subspace door, all sprites within a 3 tile radius won't spawn from where the door was placed.
