This video shows parts of the hike along the Dry Creek Road Trail to Devil's Bridge.
01/07/2022 - This was an incredible hiking experience. The weather was in the low 40's when we arrived at the trailhead, and it eventually warmed up to 60 degrees. The sunrise that morning was special, which is why I included a scene from the terrace at the Sky Rock Inn in Sedona, where we enjoyed our stay. We arrived at 7:30am and there was only a handful of cars in the lot. However, the lot filled up very quickly and cars overflowed well over 1/2 mile onto the roadway in both directions.
There is a map at the trailhead showing 3 options: we took Option 1 - Dry Creek Road Trail, which is approximately 4.5 miles round trip and considered easy. From the trail sign, you take a Right at the sign for Devil's Bridge and the trail weaves its way into the wilderness. The sun was just starting to come up when we began, when we happened to turn around and see a hot air balloon rising from from the horizon behind us. When we turned to look again, three more hot air balloons appeared. As we kept going, we came to a group of 3 deer - including a buck with big antlers. Shortly after entering the 4WD Trail, we came to another group of deer who stayed with us for around 30 seconds. The hike was already off to an amazing start.
Some reports for this trail call it boring, but you have top notch Red Rock views virtually the entire hike which was the reason I decided to visit Sedona in the first place. As you make it to the 4WD Traill, it becomes very wide and dusty. Up until the end, the trail doesn't have much elevation gain, and instead it feels like a nice walk in the woods. The further into the wilderness you go, you get closer to the massive Red Rocks and begin to gain some elevation. The trail is very well maintained the entire hike.
As you get close to Devil's Bridge, there is more elevation gain up until you reach two different steep sets of steps you scramble up. This is a very light scramble / steep hike, like very steep stairs you climb up. After the first set, you arrive at a nice plateau with great views over the wilderness you just came through. After the second set, you arrive at Devil's Bridge.
By starting out early we only had a 5-10 minute wait to get out onto the bridge. Everyone standing in line there has the same thought - "I'll take your picture out on the bridge if you take mine." And honestly, for this trail everyone knows this is the reason they came out - to walk out on the bridge.
The views from the "waiting area" are great, and from here the bridge looks very narrow along the left side. However, the bridge is over 20 feet wide and then narrows down to about 8 feet, which is not as bad as it seems. Regardless, you should only go out as far as you feel comfortable. In all honesty, the walk around the corner to get to the bridge is far more narrow, and if you look down at the narrow section you may feel uncomfortable moving forward.
When you make it out to Devil's Bridge, you can take a moment to enjoy yourself standing on this natural wonder. It's a great feeling getting out here and having a completely unobstructed view of the Red Rocks.
After we had out photo taken we sat back at the "waiting area" and just enjoyed ourselves out there. The only negative about this amazing hike is its popularity, as you share these views with a lot of other people. Unless you arrive very early this is not a quiet hike, and even if it starts out quiet it doesn't stay like that long. However, the natural beauty of Devil's Bridge is absolutely worth seeing.
