As computing moves increasingly from the individual towards the collective, understanding and optimizing computational systems necessitates an economic perspective. Mechanism design is the branch of economics that considers the design of systems involving multiple self-interested parties. We will discuss examples from mechanism design and show how an algorithmic perspective leads to robust solutions.
