The Medieval City of Rhodes, or the “Old Town” as the locals call it, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, it is the largest and oldest inhabited medieval city in Europe!
The Old Town is the city of the Knights of St. John, and some buildings still bear the emblem of the Order. Stroll along the beautiful cobbled paths, pass through the gates and colonnades, visit the squares and shady courtyards and feel the real medieval atmosphere.
The medieval city is protected by a fortress built in the 14th century by the Knights of Rhodes, which divides it into two parts: Collachio in the north and Burg or Chora in the south. In the northern part of the city there is the Street of the Knights, where the Palace of the Grand Masters (also known as the Castello), the Hospital (now a museum) and the official churches of the Order are located, while in the southern part (Chora) you will find the Turkish bazaar around the Suleiman Mosque and the old market (Socrates Street), where many local shops and restaurants are located.
Whatever you do on the island, be sure to visit the Byzantine Museum, the Cathedral of Panagia tou Kastrou, the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes and the Medieval Festival (Medieval Rose Fair), which takes place every year in May.
A walk through the old town of Rhodes is a unique experience, it is a guarantee of a truly romantic evening or a family event that will be remembered for a long time.
