Pharmacist's Explanation: Weight Loss Prevented by Toxins

There are chemicals in our environment that can disrupt our endocrine system and our detox system. The chemicals, called Obesogens, can inhibit weight loss, and also can lead to weight gain. And these chemicals can disrupt that way our bodies normally burn fat and how we store fat.

In today's talk, I am going to be looking at this paradox between toxins in our body and the inability to lose weight. Toxins can possibly really be inhibiting our metabolism and inhibiting our fat cells to push those triglycerides out into our bloodstream and into our muscles to be burned as an energy source. Our bodies essentially store toxins in fat cells as a buffer system. Fat cells protect us in a way so that these toxins are not continually floating around in the blood and wreaking more havoc and in oxidative stress. So in a way, that extra 5 or 10 pounds or maybe 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 100 pounds, whatever it is, is acting as this buffer zone so that we do not become toxic and sick.

Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been linked to obesity. This has been studied extensively. Really in the last ten years, I did a couple of, PubMed searches, and there were dozens of articles explaining this issue. It is important to be aware of a new term called Obesogens. Obesogens are chemicals that can be EDCs or another chemical that has been associated with causing weight gain in humans.

I would encourage those patients that they have a high TSH in my book and that of many others. A TSH above two, is considered too high potentially could be, a sign of hypothyroidism, even though from a traditional standpoint that TSH of two and a half or three is considered normal. I would consider further testing of looking at free T3, free T4, total T3, total T4, even antibody levels to really dig deep to find out exactly what's going on with their thyroid function.
