Speaker: Balakrishnan Rajagopal, United Nations (Geneva, Switzerland) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (Cambridge, MA, USA)
Balakrishnan Rajagopal has served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing since 2020 and is an associate professor at MIT in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
A trained lawyer, he specializes in human rights, including economic, social, and cultural rights, with a focus on land and property rights, evictions, and displacement. He founded the Displacement Research and Action Network at MIT, conducting over 20 years of research on social movements and human rights advocacy globally. Dr. Rajagopal has advised the World Commission on Dams, various governments, and UN agencies, and worked with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia in the 1990s.
