The Great Northern Candy Drop is based on a book published by the Canada Aviation and Space Museum that offers insight into the community of northern Quebec.

This high quality animated special tells the true tale of a gentle heroic bush pilot named Johnny May who must face the biggest challenge of his flying career. His annual Christmas candy drop fly-over for the town of Kuujjuaq in Northern Quebec is threatened by the meddling of a heartless government bureaucrat from the south who has the authority to ground him forever. When this overbearing official arrives in the isolated town on the edge of the Arctic Ocean she is terrified by what she considers unsafe situations, not only with Johnny’s dropping of candy, clothes and toys from the sky and his plane, which seems to have a mind of its own, but with the entire northern way of life.

She is about to take away Johnny’s pilot’s license when it’s discovered that a little local girl is lost out in the frozen snowfields. In a desperate race against time Johnny May flies off to rescue the child but when he loses his way some mysterious forces of nature and wildlife magically come together to guide him. The government official is so inspired that even she contributes by using her aviation expertise to help Johnny navigate the terrible storm and to deliver the little girl to safety. This experience changes her narrow-minded outlook to one of acceptance that the people of the north have their own distinct system of survival. She doesn’t ground Johnny May and with a renewed love of life, climbs aboard his little red plane to help with his Christmas Candy Drop.

Filled with humor, drama and charm and featuring music from the hottest young band in the north along with a cast of prestigious indigenous actors (Tantoo Cardinal narrates and Lorne Cardinal is the heroic pilot) this beautiful animated special is a heart-warming experience for the whole family.
