My front brakes get a full overhaul!
Some parts of my rear brakes have been very much needing replaced so I have gathered all the parts to do it all at once!
Similar to the previous rear brakes video, I am replacing my old, worn stock 1 piece steel disks and stock ford pads with upgraded 2 piece grooved disks and EBC yellowstuff pads but this time on the front, I am also using EBC disks and they are also floating which is a further step up from 2 piece bolted. The stock disks are pretty heavy by comparison, with the EBC floating disk conversion kit having super light aluminium bells that reduce unsprung weight to give an overall performance gain to the car even beyond braking!
The old disks are not spent but and similarly the old Ford pads have a bit of life but I wanted a fresh set up that performs and looks better!
The grooves in the new EBC floating disks are also special. A pattern specific to EBC, they look super cool and if you watched the rear brakes video then you will know that Reyland Motorsport custom cut the unique EBC groove pattern into their rear disks so that they would match - so now getting the EBC front disks on, the full package will be in place!
I also replace all the Brembo hardware used for holding the pads in place - the spring, pin and bolt - all sourced from Ford Parts and are specific to the Focus RS MK3 4 pot callipers, the stock items are a bit rusty with a bunch of crud build up so being that they are not too expensive, it seemed like the perfect time to replace these for brand new Brembo parts!
For new pads, I go for EBC Yellow Stuff. These are excellently suited to what I do most of the time - fast road driving - but are also good for some track use (the pads I have are the pre-2021 reformulation that removed copper and take longer to bed in). They are going to perform better than stock and also they will look super cool as they are painted bright yellow!
I show the entire process to do this front brake overhaul including dismantling and reassembling the caliper / pads / hardware along with tips and tricks as well as advice on the right types of grease to use along the way!
EBCabout the 2 piece floating disks:
EBC’s 2-Piece Floating Brake Discs are super high quality 2-piece floating brake discs. Designed to stand-up to repeated hard braking cycles these are tough enough for track use, but high quality materials mean they are durable and long lasting enough for road use too.
Unusually the cooling vanes are sided on these. Many discs have the vanes on one side curving in the wrong direction. This further enhances cooling, ensuring that one side is not cooling less than the other.
The surface of the disc has spiral grooves. The grooves help de-gas the pads, preventing hot gases building up between the surface of the pad and the disc. They also sweep the surface of the pad clean of debris, ensuring good stopping even after prolonged, repeated applications of the brake pedal.
The hubs are billet machined from aerospace grade aluminium. They are anodised black for durability and corrosion resistance. Aluminium is extremely rigid and durable. It also saves weight, helping nimbler handling.
The rotors mount onto the hubs with fully stainless steel square-drive bobbins. Many 2-piece discs use zinc-plated steel for cost reasons. These are billet machined stainless steel which means they will stand up to corrosion and road-salt extremely well.
2-piece with Square-drive is a type of mounting that gives the discs room to expand outwards on their mountings whilst staying centred on the hub. This means that they can get hot and expand without warping.
EBC about Yellowstuff:
EBC yellows are ECE Brake safety tested which means they must work perfectly from cold at least as good or better than stock pads.
High-efficiency performance pad for high friction and improved stopping power.
Not only a high friction pad but very resistant to heat and lots of heavy braking means that Yellowstuff has been used with great success in fast street cars and Police vehicle brakes alike.
EBC Yellowstuff is an aramid fibre based brake compound with a high brake effect from cold and is possibly one of the first ever compounds that can be used for street and track driving. These pads do require some warm-up but get even stronger under the heat of hard driving.
