The city of Sibiu was and still is one of the most important and flourishing cities in Transylvania (as well as in Romania in general), being one of the main centers of Saxon colonists established in the area in the Classical Middle Ages ( German Hochmittelalter ). The city was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania between 1692–1791 and 1849–1865 . It has experienced a significant economic and cultural revival in recent years. Sibiu is currently one of the cities with the highest level of foreign investment in Romania. In 2007, Sibiu became the European Capital of Culture , together with the city of Luxembourg (then the second time with this status), the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (the area from which the first waves of Saxon colonists in Transylvania came, in part, starting with the mid-12th century during the reign of the Hungarian King Géza II ).🇷🇴🇷🇴🌏
