In 1486, a Catholic inquisitor by the name of Heinrich Kramer published a book in Latin called Malleus Maleficarum -- “The Hammer of Witches” in English. This text established a canon for the Elaborated Theory of Witchcraft. This doctrine espoused that Europe was under attack by a secret global witch-cult, the Devil using his servants in a final battle against the power of God. According to the book, humans would be tempted by Satan and sin, and would sell their souls to him in exchange for magical powers, becoming witches. Kramer claimed that women were more susceptible to this corruption by virtue of the “weaknesses of their sex”, such as weaker faith and stronger carnal urges.
The Hammer of Witches also served as a handbook for hunting and executing supposed witches. This dogma spread like wildfire across Europe and European colonies in the New World, despite Malleus being banned by the Catholic Church. From 1450 to 1750, witch trials raged across Christendom. Tens of thousands of innocent people were murdered in these witch hunts, almost all of whom were women.
This is the power of fear. Though it is a useful and necessary tool of the human psyche, allowing us to protect ourselves from harm, it becomes a horrible weapon in the hands of authority. The fear of real threats can be manipulated by those in power, the flames fanned until they spread across vast swaths of mind and men. People may be fundamentally good, but fear mongering makes even the most virtuous among us into killers. Be wary of those who tell you that demons lurk in the shadows, and that your neighbor consorts against you.
But, perhaps those women really were witches.
