As of 2020, New York State had a population exceeding twenty million, with approximately fourteen point five million living in the New York City metropolitan area. This leaves just over six million people spread across the rest of the state, highlighting a noticeable population imbalance. Despite its relatively small size, the southern part of New York City holds a population larger than entire countries like the Czech Republic, Sweden, or Greece. If Upstate New York were its own state, it would rank twentieth in population, while Downstate New York would sit proudly at fourth.
