THE SEPSIS SIX: FOR HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS

When patients present with symptoms of infection, have a high index of suspicion that it might be sepsis. Adopting the following "Sepsis Six" within the first hour of presentation can double the chance of surivival.

1. High flow oxygen
2. Blood cultures
3. IV antibiotics (take blood cultures first if possible!)
4. IV fluid resuscitation (30ml/kg in boluses of 250-500mls)
5. Measure lactate
6. Measure urine output and strict fluid balance
