The first book of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, containing this famous prelude in C major, was published in 1722. Though it is often understood as a contemplating, relaxing piece of music, it has a great emotional impact. Bach used many four note chords, which was uncommon at the time and must have striked the audience as deeply affective. Gounod's 'Méditation' (Ave Maria), written on this prelude, shows a different reading of the piece as an arpeggiated background.
Here is my interpretation of the piece. In my playing I tried to catch as much of the emotional impact of the piece as I could.
