Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus from the Hepadnaviridae family, primarily affecting the liver. It is a partially double-stranded circular DNA virus, measuring about 42 nm, and is enveloped. HBV is highly significant in medicine due to its role in causing acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Key viral antigens include:
HBsAg (surface antigen) – marker of infection
HBcAg (core antigen) – found in the core, not detectable in serum
HBeAg (early antigen) – marker of infectivity
Transmission occurs via:
Blood transfusion
Sexual contact
Perinatal (mother to child)
The virus replicates via reverse transcription inside hepatocytes, using its cccDNA (covalently closed circular DNA) form in the#NEETUG #NEETPG #FMGE #NEXTExam #MBBS #MedStudent #NEETPreparation #NEETMicrobiology nucleus. Diagnosis involves detection of HBsAg, HBeAg, and antibodies like anti-HBc, anti-HBs, and anti-HBe.
Prevention is primarily through vaccination, which uses recombinant HBsAg.
Perfect for your NEET UG/PG microbiology prep, this video breaks down the structure, transmission, replication, serology, and clinical significance of HBV in a simplified and visual way!
