II. Introduction to Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu and his work "Thinking of Li Bai from
the End of the Earth"
1. Vernacular translation
"Thinking of Li Bai at the End of the Earth" is a poem by Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu expressing his
deep longing for his good friend Li Bai. The following is the original poem and its vernacular
translation:
**Original text:
Thinking of Li Bai from the End of the Earth
Du Fu
An autumn wind rises from the end of the sky.
What do you think of it in your mind and your eyes?
When will the wild geese bring your happy news to me?
Could autumn fill the lake and the river with glee?
Good fortune never favors those who can write well;
Demons will ever do wrong to those who know what's right.
Would you confide to the poet wronged long ago
Your verse which might comfort his soul in weal and woe?

The cool wind blows from the sky; I wonder how you feel now. When will the wild geese bring you
news? The rivers and lakes are full of water; it is late autumn. Talented people often have bad luck,
but demons and ghosts are happy to see people suffer misfortune. You may tell your heart to the
wronged souls like Qu Yuan and throw your poems into the Miluo River like him.
This poem expresses Du Fu's deep thoughts and worries for his faraway friend Li Bai, especially his
sympathy and worry for Li Bai's rough fate.
2. Context of the poem and introduction of the author
Du Fu (712-770), with the courtesy name Zimei and the pseudonym Shaoling Ye Lao, is one of the
greatest poets in ancient China and is honored as the "Poet Saint" by later generations.

**Sighs about fate
In the poem, Du Fu expresses his longing for Li Bai, reveals his dissatisfaction with the world, and
sighs about the injustice of fate. The sentence "Good fortune never favors those who can do well
write; Demons will ever do wrong to those who know what's right" reflects Du Fu's sympathy for
talented but unfortunate people and his disgust for those who are opportunistic and have no
morals or talents. Du Fu hinted at the reality that Li Bai was envied for his talent and had a rough
fate, and expressed his dissatisfaction and emotion for his friend's experience.
**The symbolic meaning of Qu Yuan
The last two sentences of the poem, "We should talk to the wronged souls and send poems to
Miluo," cleverly connects Li Bai with Qu Yuan, suggesting that Li Bai may be like Qu Yuan, who was
not appreciated for his talent and had no way to serve his country, and could only express his
grievances in poetry.
