The Madurai railway station is undergoing a significant redevelopment project under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The project aims to transform the station into a world-class facility, comparable to an airport, with improved amenities and infrastructure.
The key features of the redevelopment project include:
New Terminals: The station will have two revamped terminals, one on the eastern side and another on the western side, providing ample space for passenger movement and activities.
Subway: A subway will connect the railway premises to the Periyar bus stand, facilitating seamless transportation for passengers.
Freight Over Bridge: A dedicated freight over bridge will be constructed for efficient parcel movement.
Skywalks: Skywalks will connect parking facilities on the eastern side and the air concourse, providing convenient access for arriving passengers.
The redevelopment project is being carried out by M/s P&C Projects Private Limited, Chennai, at a total cost of ₹347 crore. The project is expected to be completed within 36 months from the date of award, which was in September 2022.
