Moderated by Dr. Laura Earls, Director of the George Read II House & Gardens, this conversation between historians of the American Revolution highlights the diverse people and movements who have engaged with the founding document of the United States, from 1776 through today.
Dr. Emily Sneff shares stories of people who helped to spread the news of the Declaration of Independence in the summer of 1776 as well as those who worried about what would happen next. Dr. Zara Anishanslin discusses the global promise and limits of the Declaration’s assertion that “all men are created equal” by looking at some of the many important afterlives of this founding document, notably among American women and in the French and Haitian Revolutions.
This conversation invites participants to consider how questions of belonging in the new nation affected Delawareans past and present.
"Beyond Words: New Histories of the Declaration of Independence" has been made possible in part by a grant from Delaware 250.
