Kandy was historically the last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka, serving as a center of Sinhalese culture and the capital of the last Sinhalese kings, established around 1476. It was the sole native polity to resist and outlast the Portuguese and Dutch colonial powers before finally succumbing to British rule in 1818. The city is famous for being a sacred Buddhist site, home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988.
