The SS President Coolidge shipwreck became a gigantic scuba divers’ playground after it struck a mine and sunk off Vanuatu. It is the most famous wreck in the world because of its size, accessibility and the challenge to dive into it. The visibility can get terrible which can cause dangerous situations as we will see in today’s story. The SS President Coolidge was an extravagant US passenger liner that was seized by the US Army before World War II began. It was being used as an army and equipment ship. During World War II, it was used to hastily transport men and needed war supplies from the US to Australia and New Zealand on the cross-Pacific run. On October 26, 1942, it was entering the harbor for Luganville, Segong Channel, on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, Vanuatu. Unfortunately, the ship accidently hit two allied mines and sank.
