One of the most under-utilised weapons in this game has to be the Imrpovised Shotgun. This gun is essentially a Musket, except its not loaded from the Bore, but rather a port. This gun can actually use nearly every calibre in the game. It's an easily crafted weapon that does not require a lot to make.
