Joining Carla Rabezzana for her 90th birthday celebration in Asti, a town in Northern Italy, on Nov. 19, 2022, was a very special guest from Rome. Pope Francis, whose family roots are in the Italy’s Piedmont region, travelled to Asti to join in the celebrations for his cousin.
The pope’s father, Mario José Bergoglio, lived in the Diocese of Asti before migrating to Argentina in 1929. The pontiff’s maternal grandparents also immigrated to Argentina from northern Italy.
