Dardanella: Vernon Dalhart with Gladys Rice 1920
Of all the versions of this song this one hits the spot.
The song held No.1 on the U.S. charts for 13 weeks, and sold an incredible five million copies.
Yet I couldn't find a single clip of this famous version on the You-tube.
There are many other Jazz versions and two earlier instrumental versions from 1919 but Edison put this one out on a Blue Amberol cylinder in 1920 with Vernon Dalhart accompanied by Gladys Rice and it was an overnight success.
It was my Grandfather's favourite and the version that most really old, old timers remember with a wistful tear.
So I had to put it out myself for I believe that this was a milestone song.
There was nothing like it before or after. And I would like the new generations to hear it.
Its whole format was modern and was a favourite of the young men returned from the trenches. It gave hope for a new and better world.
The trilling staccatos of Gladys Rice inspired the sound of the Twenties. Even to the Cinderella Rockefeller retro sound of the 60s.
Many have done this song since, but non have had the magic of this pair.
I hope that young people listen to this with an open ear and mind and consider the fact that it was made purely acoustically. This pair were singing live down a funnel of time directly to you. The only electricity was in their voices.
If i put tags like Sex Drugs Hot Babes porn etc i may get a few hits from the young. They may listen with ridicule but i believe the song can look after itself, it is a gem of a moment.
There were a few dark spots on the video so i filled them with some pictures of Isadora Duncan.
Fisher's other hits included "Come Josephine In My Flying Machine", "Peg O' My Heart", "Chicago", "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" (an Ink Spots tune recorded in 1957 by Elvis) and "Your Feet's Too Big".
