Xargon: Beyond Reality is a side-scrolling adventure platformer and the first volume of an "Epic" trilogy made by Epic Megagames in the early 90s for the DOS. Disk Operating System. How many of you remember using one of those rectangular floppy disks and clamping them into the square cartridge slots. Still probably called a disk drive.
The best thing about Xargon was that it was freeware. Or at least the version we played as kids was free. We don't remember how we got a hold of the floppy disk, but it was a gateway to another dimension filled with mystifying monsters and strange twisted landscapes.
You play the role of an archeologist with big biceps named Malvineous Havershim. While exploring some ruins in Madagascar of the mysterious "Blue Builders," he suddnely awakens in a bizarre new world. This dimension is in the grips of the mighty "Xargon" an evil floating dragon head or sorcerer or something.
Xargon was ranked #3 out of the Los Angeles Times top five games on May 7, 1994, after just four months on the market, behind Doom and Epic Pinball and above Duke Nukem 2. And still today it holds up as a fast-paced platformer with lasers and submarines and deeply varied landscapes.
