In this episode of MBTA's Strangest Stations, we will be taking a look at Ayer and Shirley Stations. Ayer, opened in 1845, has historically been a junction where multiple railroads meet. Today, passenger service is provided by the MBTA Commuter Rail Fitchburg Line. Ayer Station is also near Ayer Hill Yard, a freight yard for the Berkshire and Eastern Railroad and CSX, making for good freight railfanning in the area.
Shirley, just one stop west from Ayer, has some of the most minimal station facilities on the MBTA network, with just 1 short low level side platform. It is, however, a great place for railfanning, as both freight and passenger trains come through fast and with horn sequences. Enjoy!
