Winterexpedition Yellowstone: Nature, Wildlife, Ski, Wintercamping, Thermal Activity

Nature and reality are sometimes harsh, but also beautiful and impressive.
Winter (February) in Yellowstone: We went on a ski traverse on cross-country skis with pulka and tent. The snow was too deep and too loose for the planned crossing far from the roads, but it was also a great adventure on the roads, which in winter consist of packed snow. The temperatures were always below 0°C and went down to -18°C at night. We were able to camp at the rest areas and we shared the road with several groups of snowmobiles, but they only came in the morning and afternoon for 1-2 hours each and in several groups. Still a good compromise. We were also able to see the wildlife and on the last day we had a very special and rare opportunity to witness a pack of wolves hunting a herd of bison in winter. The hunt for 30–40 bison by about 20 wolves began in the afternoon. We arrived at Gibbon Meadows at sunset on our drive from the Yellowstone River Canyon to West Yellowstone. Our week-long ski trip had just ended. There we could see the wolves and bison in action. Unfortunately it was already quite dark, but I was still able to capture a few scenes. Later, as we continued in the dark, the prey of the hunt lay on the snow-covered road, surrounded by wolves. After we were able to continue, we came across the bison herd, which showed the signs of what had happened.
