SWEDISH GRACE
The Origin of Modern Swedish Design: a period of neoclassical design and crafts spanning the 1920s
November 14, 2014 - February 14, 2015
Swedish Grace had been a brief yet substantial moment that emerged in the 1920s, and came to represent a brilliant mix of classicism and architectural details. Although highly important for the evolution of 20th-century Swedish design, this movement is barely known outside of Scandinavia and is being revisited on this unique occasion at Jacksons Berlin.
Amongst the many rare pieces Jacksons is exhibiting is an exciting glass mosaic table that was originally a sample for the Golden Hall at the the Stockholm City Hall. Designed by Swedish artist Einar Forseth, the table depicts Apollo in the Chariot and was produced by Puhl & Wagner in Berlin.
Another stellar piece we have on view is a hand-carved lion and engraved copper top table by legendary artist Anna Petrus, which was originally exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition in 1925—the big international breakthrough for contemporary Swedish design. Due to the tremendous international success in Paris 1925, Sweden was the first European country to exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York at the exhibition “Contemporary Swedish Decorative Arts” in 1927.
