Vietnam Street Food: 10 Iconic Dishes You Must Try in Hanoi!

In this episode, we dive headfirst into the one thing you simply cannot skip in Vietnam—the food. Over the course of four days in Hanoi, we ate our way through this flavorful city, from smoky street corners to iconic institutions that even presidents have visited. From crispy bánh mì and smoky bún chả to sweet egg coffee, sizzling hot pot, and deep-fried fermented pork (yes, really), we covered it all—and yes, I think I gained two kilos in the process.

We kicked things off with a classic Vietnamese breakfast staple: the bánh mì—a crispy baguette loaded with pickled veggies, fresh herbs, pâté, and meats. Then came the bún chả, eaten sidewalk-style on tiny plastic chairs, just how the locals do it. We even checked out the famous Obama bún chả spot—Bún Chả Hương Liên—where the vibe, history, and food all live up to the hype.

Of course, no Hanoi food tour is complete without a stop at Café Giảng, the birthplace of egg coffee, which totally feels like a dessert in a cup. We also tried xôi dừa, the sticky coconut rice treat locals love. And somehow, I ended up deep into nem chua rán—a crunchy, tangy fried pork snack teens love—and spoiler: it’s dangerously good.

There was hot pot (lẩu), grilled meat at nướng tại bàn, a cozy stop at Bánh Mì Tram for hearty Vietnamese sốt vang and sizzling bít tết, and one final hands-on favorite: nem nướng cuốn at Highway 4—DIY grilled pork rolls with rice paper, herbs, and dipping sauce. Hanoi truly delivered.
