Cycling along the Mittellandkanal from Groningen to Berlin? Is it possible? Part one.

This is the first video of my bike ride to Berlin along the Mittelland Canal.
Is the canal suitable as a cycling route? Yes and no. It is the shortest continuous route if you want to cycle to Berlin from the North or Middle of the Netherlands. You do need a good trekking bike, because the road surface is sometimes quite bad.
You will not be bothered by cars, because the roads along almost the entire canal are closed to cars and motorcycles. So there are no busy intersections, traffic lights and other delays.
Partly because of this, there are also few facilities along the route. Signage is minimal, there are a few restaurants near marinas, but hotels and campsites are hard to find along the canal. However, detouring a few kilometers for a campsite is doable and hotels can be found in every larger town along the canal.
Because the road runs along the canal, there are hardly any differences in height, but after a few hundred kilometers you sometimes want to see something other than trees, a road and a canal.
Anyway, the route is a very short and fast basis for cycling to Berlin. Especially if you use your smartphone and GPS, you can adjust the route to your own wishes.

Dit is de eerste video van m'n fietstocht naar Berlijn langs het Mittellandkanaal.
Is het kanaal geschikt als fietsroute? Ja en nee. Het is de kortste doorlopende route als je vanuit Noord- of Middel Nederland naar Berlijn wilt fietsen. Je hebt wel een goede trekkingfiets nodig, want het wegdek is soms vrij slecht.
Je hebt geen last van auto's, want de wegen langs vrijwel het hele kanaal zijn gesloten voor auto's en motoren. Er zijn dus ook geen drukke kruisingen, stoplichten en ander oponthoud.
Er zijn, mede daardoor, ook weinig voorzieningen langs de route. De bewegwijzering is minimaal, er zijn een paar restaurants in de buurt van jachthavens, maar hotels en campings zijn langs het kanaal nauwelijks te vinden. Echter, een paar kilometer omrijden voor een camping is prima te doen en hotels zijn in elke grotere stad die langs het kanaal ligt te vinden.
Omdat de weg langs het kanaal loopt heb je nauwelijks hoogteverschillen, maar na een paar honderd kilometer wil je wel eens wat anders zien dan een bomen, een weg en een kanaal.
Maar goed, de route is een hele korte en snelle basis om naar Berlijn te fietsen. Zeker als je gebruik maakt van je smartphone en GPS kan je de route aanpassen aan je eigen wensen.

Ist der Kanal als Radweg geeignet? Ja und nein. Es ist die kürzeste durchgehende Route, wenn Sie aus dem Norden oder der Mitte der Niederlande nach Berlin radeln möchten. Sie brauchen ein gutes Trekkingrad, denn der Straßenbelag ist manchmal ziemlich schlecht.
Sie werden nicht von Autos belästigt, da die Straßen entlang fast des gesamten Kanals für Autos und Motorräder gesperrt sind. So gibt es keine stark befahrenen Kreuzungen, Ampeln und andere Verzögerungen.
Auch aus diesem Grund gibt es entlang der Route nur wenige Einrichtungen. Die Beschilderung ist minimal, es gibt ein paar Restaurants in der Nähe von Jachthäfen, aber Hotels und Campingplätze sind entlang des Kanals schwer zu finden. Ein paar Kilometer Umweg für einen Campingplatz sind jedoch machbar und Hotels findet man in jeder größeren Stadt entlang des Kanals.
Da die Straße entlang des Kanals verläuft, gibt es kaum Höhenunterschiede, aber nach ein paar hundert Kilometern möchte man manchmal etwas anderes sehen als Bäume, eine Straße und einen Kanal.
Jedenfalls ist die Strecke eine sehr kurze und schnelle Basis um nach Berlin zu radeln. Vor allem wenn Sie Ihr Smartphone und GPS nutzen, können Sie die Route an Ihre eigenen Wünsche anpassen.
