Do mtDNA pedigree mutations provide an estimate of the long-term mtDNA substitution rate? Dr. Bryan Gitschlag discusses the factors that are sometimes unaccounted for in mtDNA pedigree studies and how that can lead to incorrect estimates of the substitution rate for humans.
Bryan Gitschlag has a Ph.D. in biological sciences from Vanderbilt University, focusing on evolutionary genetics of mitochondria, and is a current postdoctoral fellow in theoretical population genetics at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. He is passionate about science communication, education, and exploring the history, diversity and complexity of life through the study of genetics and evolution.
