for the record, I chose a bad angle to video myself and then was inspired to do trippy edits to distract yall
This music began as an improvised trio session at Bearcave Recording in Youngstown, OH in early October 2024. The funky, nu jazz trio jams showcase our ability to syncopate on the fly while also developing a story arc with our choice in when to change our repetition. While much of my output in the previous year has used electronic instruments, trio & error brings my signature MUMBLE JAZZ style to an organic and soulful vibe.
On a Sunday evening, after about 2 hours of just chilling and catching up, myself (bass), Thin Thicket (keys, engineering), and Damon the Soulful Samurai (drum set) improvised three long-form improvised nu jazz jams. We chose the trio arrangement because most of our work in 2024 has been electronic. The ability for each of us to naturally fit into our best space made the trio the most relaxed for improv, as it was a Sunday after all. After the session, Damon returned home and Thin Thicket & I mixed the session and later played MW3.
A few days after the recording, I 'slice edited' the long jams into 3 playlist able jazz singles. Slice editing is a technique that I copied from Ted Macero, Miles Davis' producer on such as albums as Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way. I took the best moments from the long version and put all of those moments together to form a single-length song. I love this technique because it allows for the original recordings to not be orientated towards a single perfect tape, but rather a 'throw it all at the wall' mentality. This makes for a more relaxed and free recording environment, while also proving to be time efficient and worthy for capturing those first-take moments that are often lost in the recording process.
For me, my 2023 live performances were mainly MUMBLE JAZZ , with my signature autotuned jazz scatting played over premade beats; 2024 was mainly Loop There It Is, MUMBLE JAZZ over improvised beats; 2025 will include more organic and live band MUMBLE JAZZ scenarios.
