5 Tips for Classical Guitar Students

Dr Jonathan Fitzgerald, Chair of Guitars at the UWA Conservatorium of Music, shares his 5 top tips for guitar players heading into exams and auditions.

If you are a guitarist who's thinking of studying at UWA in the future, there are a multitude of ways in which you can incorporate music into your studies.

You can choose to specialise in performance, composition, musicology or electronic music through these majors:
Music Studies & Music Specialist Studies (dual Major)
Music Studies*
Music General Studies*
Electronic Music and Sound Design*

*can be combined with another area of study

Students can also choose to study individual music units to complement their other studies at UWA. These include Music Ensemble units designed to give students the opportunity to play in
music ensembles.

Experienced musicians can join ensembles like: Symphony Orchestra
• Wind Orchestra
• Guitar Ensemble
• Jazz Ensemble
• Brass Ensemble
• Flute Choir
• The Winthrop Singers
• Con-Cantorum (vocal)
and Concordia Vocalis (vocal).

We also offer a range of ensembles that are open to
students of all abilities and musical backgrounds
such as: Symphonic Chorus
• Percussion Ensembles
• Ukulele Ensemble
• Handbells
• Show Choir and beginners Guitar ensemble.
