Thining your plants is tough to do, but it's so important to do!
Maybe you sowed seeds a little close together or you have a high germination rate. Pulling out seedlings is a painful process, but you'll be rewarded with a much stronger crop. When your plants are fighting for water and nutrition, they're going to struggle and be smaller than those that are alone. Overcrowding can happen, but thinning is key.
I like to use a paring knife because it's small and makes transplanting easy. Seedlings can be fragile, so it's important to be careful throughout this process. Drier soil can actually make it easier, but be sure to get them into their own cell or area with plenty of water once you've given your seedling its new home. The environment is also key, so we show you both in the greenhouse and outside in the garden.
